After an absence of five years, Andy Hicks has fought his way back into the top 32 after a consistent string of results during the last two seasons.

At the British Open in Brighton last term, the left-hander knocked out Dominic Dale and Marco Fu then came from 4-2 down to beat Ken Doherty 5-4 with two century breaks in the last three frames.

Just a few days later at the Travis Perkins UK Championship, Hicks saw off Anthony Hamilton then beat Doherty again to reach the last 16, where he lost to Scotsman Graeme Dott.

Winner of the B&H Snooker Championship in 1997, Hicks has also appeared in the semi-finals of both the Masters and the UK Championship.

Joe Swail on the other hand tumbled ten places down the ranking list and out of the top 32 after winning just three matches last season.

He had hoped to finish on a high note by qualifying for the televised stages of the Embassy World Championship but lost 10-8 in the final qualifying round to eventual champion Shaun Murphy.

Swails career earnings may be higher than Hicks but he managed to pick up a "Paltry" :-) Â£27k last season, compared to Â£38k made by our selection.

This season it is noted that Swail has qualified for the Malta Cup whereas Hicks has not.hardly suprising really considering the top prize is Â£11k and the players have to pay their own expenses!!! We shall take it that Hicks didnt want to waste his time.

A sure-fire thriller this one will surely see Hicks take a winter break in the warmer climate offered in Beijing, and leave poor Joe to suffer the weather back in Ireland.
