As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end and we have a sneaky suspicion this will ring true tonight when former contender finalist Peter Manfredo Junior (W26-L3-D0) challenges "The Pride Of Wales" Joe Calzaghe (W42-L0-D0) for the WBO version of the Super-Middleweight crown.
At twenty-six years of age Manfredo comes into this fight in the absolute prime of his career, he comes off the back of two heavy-handed victories over the previously unbeaten Joe Spina (W19-L1-D1) and former IBU Super-Middleweight champion Scotty Pemberton (W29-L5-D1). Both bouts were technical stoppages coming in the third frame.
In the form of Calzaghe, "The Pride Of Providence" Manfredo faces a fighter of which he has faced the likes of before. A ten year champion Calzaghe who won his WBO belt when out-pointing the great Chris Eubanks (W45-L5-D2) back in '97 has defended his title an amazing nineteen times and will go down in the history books as a great champion.
But as the opening sentence says, all good things must come to an end.
At 35 Calzaghe is definitely not getting any better, his twelve round destruction of Jeff "Left Hook" Lacey (W22-L1-D0) although devastating was pretty predictable. Lacey was perfectly matched in style for Calzaghe and was duly battered.
Manfredo will pose a far more dangerous threat to Calzaghe than Lacey, he moves far to well to get tagged in the same manner.
With the great Sugar Ray Leonard standing in for De La Hoya tied corner-man Freddie Roach in his corner, Manfredo is sure to be fired up.
